Are you happy?

Have you ever thought about the difference between "pleasure" and "happiness"? Well, its a question that keeps on bubbling every now and then in my mind.

Anyone who is laughing does not mean he/she is happy. It could be pleasure.

Pleasure comes from external sources whereas happiness is from one's insight or inner sources. Pleasure can be from the worldly possessions whereas happiness can be from sacrifices and compromises. Pleasure can be gaining everything and happiness can be losing everything. Pleasure can be acquired by laughing at someone but happiness is experienced by being happy in someone's happiness. Happiness is everlasting whereas pleasure is short lived.

Happiness is something that can be felt but cannot be explained, it is to be earned through sharing as it would grow when shared.

But hey, are you happy?

CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR CELL NUMBER HAS WON ...

At 1:30 am last night, I received an sms saying "CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR CELL NUMBER HAS WON £195000 IN THE ONGOING NOKIA PORMO. FOR CLAIM EMAIL: nokiacashpayment@rocketmail.com & CALL +447031932564". The message was sent from the number +2348070759015.

We've had the email and letter scams, now fraudsters are targeting us by phone text messages. We all receive thousands of spam mails just like the sms, it wasn't worth a split-second thought. But, I saw it in a different angle.

We have about 300,000 population here in the Maldives. A staggering 360,000 (yes, it is) mobile phone subscribers are registered here, who are spread across 200~300 islands(including industrial islands). Now imagine the number of victims who may possibly fall for this message. This is the newest method for fraud across the world that has started recently.

It's time for service providers (Dhiraagu & Wataniya) to start educating their "beloved" customers about these sort of scams and do a little more ethical business than promoting secondary cell numbers for us. My advice, delete it as soon as u receive it.

What IF...

I was having my breakfast today with a colleague of mine & we were talking about the upcoming presidential elections. I asked him who he thinks is better. Not to much surprise, he told me that its too early to decide coz we don’t know them all plus their policies. It was then, he started an interesting topic to which my mind started the usual work.

"It looks like an oil barrel is gonna cost $200. People in many countries are protesting coz of inflation. Food production is lesser than global demand.

What IF, we can't afford oil & then therez no electricity?

What IF, India doesn't export rice and we cant eat?

What IF. therez a world war III coz of inflation?

He kept on elaborating these points to say that, as for one, he is looking forward to policies that will adjust to global economic dynamics. "Back in the old days we used to eat 'olhu ala' (yam) as a staple. We need policies for increased food production and implementing renewable energy projects."

Yes, he has a point. As we are gearing up to dive deep down to the sea of democracy, while leaders promising people for better education, housing, health care & all that, therez so little talk about the very basics of our survival. We surely need carefully crafted economic policies to this nation that would ensure sustainable life.

We all know that our islands are at risk coz of global warming, but, hey what about the people???
