WikiLeaks - World War III in the making?

Yes, it’s the global buzz of the moment. WikiLeaks has become a household name. Its impacts are global; heard, viewed, read and talked everywhere you go.

WikiLeaks is an international new media non-profit organization that publishes submissions of otherwise unavailable documents from anonymous news sources and leaks. Its website was launched in 2006. Within a year of its launch, the site claimed a database that had grown to more than 1.2 million documents. The organization has described itself as having been founded by Chinese dissidents, as well as journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the United States, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa. The Guardian newspaper describes Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, as its director.

And as we all know by now, WikiLeaks has “leaked” some juicy, damning and jaw breaking secret diplomatic documents of the world superpower USA. The leaks sparked and hyped attention, discussions, disclosures and hot seat grilling of almost all world leaders, diplomats and nations across the globe, down from the islands of the Maldives to Russia and China.

Apart from the entertainment we enjoy from those sensational revelations and shockwaves thereafter, there is and underlying warfare already started and growing by every millisecond.

Soon after the major service providers of WikiLeaks unplugged their services and the subsequent “arrest” (actually Assange turned himself in), his “fan club” or those who like the idea behind his actions, have launched multiple cyber attacks under the the name of “Operation Payback” on big corporations like Amazon, MasterCard and diplomats, who have negatively voiced or acted on WikiLeaks or its founder, Julian Assange. As a reaction, governments have already started “attacking” the cyber attackers to crush them.

Operation Payback is a coordinated group of attacks on internet piracy opponents by internet activists or recently referred to as hacktivists. It started as retaliation to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on torrent sites; piracy proponents then decided to launch DDoS attacks on piracy opponents. The initial reaction snowballed into a wave of attacks on several major anti-piracy groups. Operation Payback is affiliated with Anonymous; an army of hacktivists. Of course, the “other side” of these attacks and retaliations are not covered on the mainstream media. As of now, I haven’t read of any bloodshed due to this.

However, it just bubbles my mind. Could this new leap of information evolution and the after effects render the start right recipe for yet another World War? what IF, China or North Korea was behind the whole idea of WikiLeaks (and the like to come up within next weeks) and the US (or West) declares war on the grounds of “freedom for the world”? Wouldn’t that be the World War III?

As for one, I personally do not want that to happen and my grandchildren (if humanity, including myself survives) to read “World War III : West vs East”.

Are you happy?

Have you ever thought about the difference between "pleasure" and "happiness"? Well, its a question that keeps on bubbling every now and then in my mind.

Anyone who is laughing does not mean he/she is happy. It could be pleasure.

Pleasure comes from external sources whereas happiness is from one's insight or inner sources. Pleasure can be from the worldly possessions whereas happiness can be from sacrifices and compromises. Pleasure can be gaining everything and happiness can be losing everything. Pleasure can be acquired by laughing at someone but happiness is experienced by being happy in someone's happiness. Happiness is everlasting whereas pleasure is short lived.

Happiness is something that can be felt but cannot be explained, it is to be earned through sharing as it would grow when shared.

But hey, are you happy?

CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR CELL NUMBER HAS WON ...

At 1:30 am last night, I received an sms saying "CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR CELL NUMBER HAS WON £195000 IN THE ONGOING NOKIA PORMO. FOR CLAIM EMAIL: nokiacashpayment@rocketmail.com & CALL +447031932564". The message was sent from the number +2348070759015.

We've had the email and letter scams, now fraudsters are targeting us by phone text messages. We all receive thousands of spam mails just like the sms, it wasn't worth a split-second thought. But, I saw it in a different angle.

We have about 300,000 population here in the Maldives. A staggering 360,000 (yes, it is) mobile phone subscribers are registered here, who are spread across 200~300 islands(including industrial islands). Now imagine the number of victims who may possibly fall for this message. This is the newest method for fraud across the world that has started recently.

It's time for service providers (Dhiraagu & Wataniya) to start educating their "beloved" customers about these sort of scams and do a little more ethical business than promoting secondary cell numbers for us. My advice, delete it as soon as u receive it.

What IF...

I was having my breakfast today with a colleague of mine & we were talking about the upcoming presidential elections. I asked him who he thinks is better. Not to much surprise, he told me that its too early to decide coz we don’t know them all plus their policies. It was then, he started an interesting topic to which my mind started the usual work.

"It looks like an oil barrel is gonna cost $200. People in many countries are protesting coz of inflation. Food production is lesser than global demand.

What IF, we can't afford oil & then therez no electricity?

What IF, India doesn't export rice and we cant eat?

What IF. therez a world war III coz of inflation?

He kept on elaborating these points to say that, as for one, he is looking forward to policies that will adjust to global economic dynamics. "Back in the old days we used to eat 'olhu ala' (yam) as a staple. We need policies for increased food production and implementing renewable energy projects."

Yes, he has a point. As we are gearing up to dive deep down to the sea of democracy, while leaders promising people for better education, housing, health care & all that, therez so little talk about the very basics of our survival. We surely need carefully crafted economic policies to this nation that would ensure sustainable life.

We all know that our islands are at risk coz of global warming, but, hey what about the people???
